<p>Step one... we draw an outline, any outline. Some basic guidelines to follow are:<ol>
</ol></p>
<p>Here are some outlines I drew:</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock0.gif" width="56" height="36" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock0.gif" width="112" height="72" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /></p>
<p>Well, they aren't too good, you all could probably do better if you put some time into it.</p>
<p>Now we color them in:</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock1.gif" width="56" height="36" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock1.gif" width="112" height="72" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /></p>
<p>Now, we do NOT add a noise effect, but instead choose a light source and imagine where the light hits it. I will again do a top right one:</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock2.gif" width="56" height="36" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock2.gif" width="112" height="72" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /></p>
<p>If you examine the picture you begin to get a better feel of how the rocks actually look, where they are concave and where they extend out ward.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock3.gif" width="56" height="36" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock3.gif" width="112" height="72" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /></p>
<p>I have now added a third shade, they now have some good depth, but look really smooth (you may want this though)</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock4.gif" width="56" height="36" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock4.gif" width="112" height="72" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /></p>
<p>Here I cleaned up the lines and roughened them up a bit.</p>
<p class="center"><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock5.gif" width="55" height="35" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /><img src="http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/images/tutorials/minituts/rocks/rock5.gif" width="110" height="70" border="0" alt="" hspace="10" /></p>
<p>You may make your rocks any color you want, but I would strongly advise against going crazy with it.</p>

- always make it asymmetrical (as in not symmetrical, as in not a mirror image along any lateral or radial line) unless it is man made
- many rocks have a chiseled look to them, try to keep fairly sharp edges
- don't get too fancy
